HADASSAH WEEK END — JUNE 21-23

The Montana Chapter of Hadassah is a member of the Hadassah Desert Region. It is a special organization as it is one of only two Hadassah chapters to cover an entire state. The members of Montana Hadassah organize local book clubs and fund raising events. But we also come together as a single group each year to plan activities, share our interests and knowhow, and get to know one another. Although the physical distances between us is large, the over 100 members share their enthusiasm for the Hadassah mission and strive to create a sense of Jewish community.

Our Mission
Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for and commitment to its partnership with the land and people of Israel. It enhances the health of people worldwide through its support of medical care and research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. Hadassah empowers its members and supporters, as well as youth in Israel and America through opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy and Jewish continuity.

The best part of our organization is that we provide a unique opportunity to connect with other fabulous Jewish women around the great state of Montana. Our chapter is itself a resource to create new friendships while we pursue our Jewish education and do important global service. Local groups form Book Clubs and Fundraisers, and fun activities to build our Montana Jewish community.

We are looking forward to a wonderful Montana Statewide Hadassah Meeting, June 21 – 23. We will be on the shore of beautiful Flathead Lake at Marina Cay in Bigfork. You will be inspired by our Shabbat Services, educated by health professionals, informed about Israel, past, present and future, and delighted with good food and friends. As usual we will have a lot of fun with our Silent Auction of new or lightly used items and make plans for our Chapter at our annual business meeting. Laura Green, our Region Area Vice President will be our special guest. Laura’s in depth knowledge of Hadassah and Israel will make for stimulating discussions. Of course we will plan on some free time for taking in the town of Big Fork. The weekend will begin with Shabbat dinner at Steve and Patty Schnall’s beautiful home on the Swan River. The meal will be provided by our Flathead Valley members. Please make your hotel reservations and send us your registration form as soon as possible. STUDENT RABBI MIRIAM FARBER’S LAST VISIT – MAY 10-12

Student Rabbi Miriam Farber’s last official visit to Great Falls will be Mother’s Day week end, May 10-12. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend Friday evening services, Saturday morning Torah study, and the milchig (dairy) potluck/adult discussion Saturday evening. The schedule follows.

  • Friday evening, 05/10/2013: Shabbat services led by student Rabbi Miriam Farber, 7:30 P.M. at The Bethel *
  • Saturday morning, 05/11/2013: Torah Study, led by Student Rabbi Miriam Farber, 10:00 A.M. at the Bethel *

What a wonderful heritage to share with each other and to pass on to our children. Let’s take this time and every time we get a chance to be uniquely Jewish to celebrate it and to kindle or rekindle the lights of Shabbat in our hearts.

Student Rabbi Miriam Farber will be here this weekend! Mark your calendar for a Great Falls ‘Jewish Weekend!’

As Joy noted last week, Student Rabbi Miriam Farber will be here in a few short days; it has been too long since we have gathered for services.  

  • Kabbalat Shabbat services will be held at the Bethel on Friday, April 19 at 7:30 pm.
  • Torah Study will be held at the Bethel at 10am on Saturday, April 20.
  • Our NFTY (National Federation of Temple Youth) will also be meeting on Saturday afternoon.  Contact Rabbi Miriam if you need more information about this meeting.
  • We will gather for an adult discussion at the Bethel on Saturday evening, 5:30 pm.  This will also be a vegetarian/milchig potluck meal.  Please bring a dish to share!

URJ CAMP KALSMAN TO LAUNCH JEWISH TEEN FOUNDATION THIS SUMMER
Bellevue, WA – March 6, 2013 – URJ Camp Kalsman was selected as one of 38 North
American summer camps to participate in the 2013 Camp Philanthropy Program of the Jewish
Teen Funders Network (JTFN), a youth philanthropy project of the Jewish Funders Network.
Through the JTFN Camp Philanthropy Program, Camp Kalsman will create a Jewish teen
foundation, in which campers will work together as a “foundation board,” giving away real
money to non-profit organizations of their choosing.
Located on 299 acres outside of Arlington, WA, URJ Camp Kalsman serves campers from the
greater Pacific Northwest community, from Oregon to British Columbia, Alaska to Montana,
Washington state, and beyond. Committed to core values of respect, peace, kindness, and our
relationship to teva (nature), we build a warm and caring community where campers have fun
and experience the excitement and warmth of belonging to a Reform Jewish community.
Recognizing the potential of Jewish youth philanthropy programs to empower and educate
teens about effective philanthropy and Jewish values, JTFN awarded 38 grants to Jewish
summer camps committed to creating high quality Jewish teen philanthropy programs. In
addition to a grant of $1,000, JTFN will work closely with grantees on program development and
staff training.
Through the grantmaking process, campers will review grant proposals from non-profit
organizations, visit potential grantees, and determine which organizations to support; the
philanthropists-in-training will examine Jewish texts, traditions, and values related to giving. The
program encourages campers to “learn by giving” and will generate at least $38,000 in grants,
with each teen foundation awarding a minimum of $1,000. The program is generously supported
by the Maimonides Fund.
Jeremy J. Fingerman, CEO, Foundation for Jewish Camp sees the pilot program as a valuable
contribution to the field of Jewish summer camping. “FJC sees this JTFN program as a
wonderful opportunity for campers to experience the act and the impact of Tzedakah on their
world. Besides benefiting the recipients, the campers are learning valuable life lessons of
responsibility and teamwork and gaining insight into the diversity of the non-profit world.”
URJ CAMP KALSMAN TO LAUNCH JEWISH TEEN FOUNDATION THIS SUMMER
Indeed, Camp Director David Berkman appreciates the power of Jewish youth philanthropy. “At
Kalsman our purpose is to create committed lifelong Jews. Campers are concerned about and
invested in the world around them. Our responsibility, therefore, is to help them learn to be
leaders in the community, which means the giving of time, of energy, and of money. With the
help of JTFN, our campers and staff will be better prepared to be the Jewish leaders of
tomorrow,” he said.
About URJ Camp Kalsman’s Project
About a dozen 11th graders, who are selected to be summer 2013 Camp Kalsman Counselors-
in-Training (CIT), will become the camp’s very first cadre of “philanthropists-in-training.” In
addition to learning how to be future Jewish camp counselors, the CITs will devote themselves
to learning about and alleviating food insecurity. The teenage grantmakers will collect donations
of food from camper families, as well as harvest fruits and vegetables from the gardens and
trees in camp, for delivery to a local food bank. The CITs will also visit area nonprofits to gain a
firsthand perspective on the power of tzedakah (justice, “charity”) and Gemilut Chasadim (acts
of loving kindness).
About Jewish Teen Funders Network
The mission of the Jewish Teen Funders Network (JTFN) is to provide Jewish teens with hands-
on opportunities to engage in collective philanthropic giving with their peers, guided by Jewish
values. A program of the Jewish Funders Network, JTFN is committed to increasing the number
of Jewish youth philanthropy programs around the country, and the number of teens involved in
these programs. JTFN also aims to enhance the Jewish educational value of these programs by
providing curricular and programmatic resources on Jewish values and philanthropy.

MAJCO Communities to Light Menorot Together at Capitol, 12 Noon, Monday, Dec 10, 2012

Dear Montana Jews:

For the fourth year in a row, the Montana Association of Jewish Communities (MAJCO) is sponsoring a Chanukah Menorot Lighting event with Lt. Governor Bohlinger. We hope to again have all nine communities of MAJCO light a Menorah (one each). This will be our last year lighting the candles with Lt. Governor Bohlinger as a new administration takes over in January. Let’s use this opportunity to come together as Montana Jews and celebrate the light that we all share.

12:00 p.m. Lighting Ceremony with Lt. Governor Bohlinger; Please arrive at 11:30 a.m. to set up.

Parking: Park in the lot that is on the north side of the capitol or park on the streets all around the capitol. There should be plenty of parking, but please allow time to find a space and walk to the Rotunda. 1301 East 6th Avenue, Helena, MT

The nine communities of MAJCO, listed from East to West based on town/city of location, are:

  • Congregation Beth Aaron, Billings

  • The Jewish Community of Helena
  • Congregation B’nei Israel, Butte
  • Congregation Har Shalom, Missoula

  • Synagogue of the Northern Rockies, Whitefish

At 11:30 a.m., we will meet to setup tables, tablecloths, Menorot, signs, and any info you bring about your community. Each community should bring their own Menorah and candles. MAJCO will provide extra candles and Menorot if needed, small signs for each community, and a program that includes contact information for each community. Communities are welcome to bring Chanukah foods to share.

MAJCO President, Josh Burnim, will welcome the crowd and introduce the Lt. Governor and the Rabbis. Rabbis Barbara Block, Chaim Bruk and Ed Stafman will speak on Chanukah. (Rabbi Allen Secher is not able to attend.) Lt. Governor Bohlinger will address the crowd. Then, we will all light our Menorot together and sing the blessings and Maoz Tzur. After the ceremony, we will share Sufganiyot and other Chanukah treats. The ceremony should only take 30 minutes, but we encourage all to spend some time before and afterwards with each other.

At 1:00 p.m., MAJCO Officers and Delegates will meet upstairs for a business meeting. All are welcome to attend.

I hope many of you, and at least one representative from each MAJCO community, will make the trip to Helena to share in this statewide Jewish event, building ties with Jews from across the state. Please share this email with other members of your Congregations and Communities.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Please note the change in date, time, and venue for the annual community Chanukah party.

Please mark your calendars for these upcoming events.

  • CHANUKAH: The first bulb of the Diane Kaplan Memorial Chanukiah will be lit on Saturday, 12/08/2012, at 5:30 P.M. at The Civic Center, as will each remaining bulb on all successive nights.

    The annual community Chanukah party will be held at the YWCA, 220 2nd Avenue North, on Sunday afternoon, 12/09/2012, at 2:30 P.M. We will adjourn at 5:00 P.M. or so and shift the party to the Civic Center to light the Channukiah. Please bring something yummy and milchig (dairy) to share, and a healthy hankering for latkes.

  • PURIM: Sunday, February 24, 2013. Plans, if any, yet to be announced.
  • PASSOVER SEDER: Tuesday, March 26, second night of Passover, at Clark and Lewie’s.
